Step 1: Research Analysis
Topic of Interest: | Use of text messaging to remotely deliver psychiatric nursing services
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) | Darvish, A., Khodadadi-Hassankiadeh, N., Abdoosti, S., & Kashani, M. G. (2019). Effect of Text Messaging-based Psychiatric Nursing Program on Quality of Life in Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Professional Practice Use:
One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article |
The study explores the effect of using text messaging to delivery psychiatric nursing services among post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. It particularly focuses on how this approach to delivering psychiatric nursing services affects the patients’ quality of life. Applying a randomized controlled trial methodology that recruited 66 PTSD patients, the study shows that the approach causes a significant improvement in PTSD and quality of life. In addition, the approach significantly reduces PTSD recurrence frequency. Overall, the researchers recommend that text messaged-based nursing care approaches be applied among PTSD patients to reduce the severity of their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Research Analysis Matrix
Add more rows if necessary |
Strengths of the Research | Limitations of the Research | Relevancy to Topic of Interest | Notes |
Focused on approving/disapproving an assumption made. | The assumption is that text messaging improves access to psychiatric nursing services thereby helping in improving care outcomes. | It helps to direct the research towards a focused topic.
Captures information at a specific point in time and place. The study was conducted in Tehran, Iran, from January 2014 to October 2015. | This helps in ensuring that the results are attributed to a specific population at a specific point in time. | This takes the time and location into consideration when generalizing the results for other populations. With this understanding, it is possible to have a clearer understanding of the research interest such that subsequent research would attribute any differences to changes in time and place/population.
Includes an intervention and control group. | The two groups allow for comparison with the difference being the intervention. | This ensures that any differences noted between the two groups are attributed to the intervention.
The results have been analyzed. | The results have been analyzed to create new ideas and theories that would guide additional research. This is useful for exploring new information that may have been mentioned in other literature, but may not necessarily tie back to the initial theory. | This is useful for explaining any new discoveries, showing how it can be helpful.
It identifies a cause and effect relationship between text messaging-based psychiatric nursing services and care outcomes for PTSD patients. | The identified causal relationship shows clear correlation when the intervention and control groups are compared | The associations between the intervention and care outcomes are easy to interpret.
The timing of the data snapshot is representative. | Data is collected between January 2014 and October 2015 thus allowing for important not to be overlooked. | Collecting data at different timings offers more representative data.
|
Possibility of findings being skewed as the researchers are nurses who may have been biased. | Susceptible to biases such as social acceptability bias, researcher bias, recall bias, and responder bias. | The strategies for eliminating the biases are not discussed, thus crating the possibility of biases being present in the research. |
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research
The approach applied in identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research was conducting a library database search. The database has access to many publications. In addition, it is developed using intelligent algorithms and has unique settings that can specify the search parameters in terms of type of publication, date of publication, subject and topic. Working with the search parameters makes it possible to refine the search and ensuring that only current and relevant peer-reviewed research is identified and analyzed. In addition, a critique table was applied to evaluate the relevance of each identified article in terms of methodology applied, results, relevance to the study, and implications for practice (Hall & Roussel, 2022).
Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research
Two strategies were found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research. First, conducting key work searches in library databases. This is an effective option for finding research on specific subjects, especially when the library database focuses on specific subjects. For instance, PubMed is a useful database for finding peer-reviewed research on subjects related to medical and life sciences. Besides that, a library database has algorithms for refining search parameters so that only peer-reviewed research is found (Grove & Gray, 2022). Second, a generalized outline search can be conducted using a combined search tab. This is an effective strategy for finding research on obscure topics. This strategy helps in simultaneously searching multiple databases such that if peer-reviewed research is found in any of the many databases, then that would be seen in the search results (Emory Libraries, 2020).

Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research
CINAHL is a useful resource for finding peer-reviewed research. This library database is available online. The database indexes nursing and health care publications thus making it a rich resource for accessible research relevant to the two subjects. In fact, the database contains more than 7.4 million publication records to include 5,500 indexed journals and 1,300 cited journal references (EBSCO Information Service, 2022).
